The newspaper had been carelessly tossed aside and was languishing atop a low heating duct in the train station.

It had been there for a number of months, possibly years, if the dust encasing it was anything to go by.  Miriam lengthened her neck as the escalator slowly trundled up toward the platform, trying to get a closer look, but the date could not be read from such a distance, nor could she read the headline through the layer of dust.
