Writing Competitions 2015 (Jan-Apr)

As my laptop is still ‘under repair’ (I suspect that it will soon be deemed ‘unfixable’) I haven’t been up to much writing or editing since November – though I’ve been loving the chance to catch up on some reading! As a result, here’s a selection of potential writing competitions coming up in 2015 for you to mark out in your new diaries, especially if your new year’s resolution is to enter more writing competitions!

2015 Jeremy Mogford Prize for Food and Drink Writing
Closing Date: 1st January 2015
Entry Fee: Free
Judges will be looking for entries linked to food and drink for this Oxford Literary Festival competition. Stories can be up to 2,500 words in length and there can only be one entry per person. The prize is a whopping £7,500.

James White Award
Closing Date: 31st January 2015
Entry Fee: Free
For science-fiction stories of less than 6,000 words by a new writer (aka, not a professional writer). First prize of £200 and publication in Interzone.

The Homestart Bridgwater Short Story Prize 2015
Closing Date: 1st February 2015
Entry Fee: £7
Judged by Tracy Chevalier, this competition requests short stories on any theme of 2,200 words with prizes up to £500. The entry fee goes toward the charity, supporting families with young children in difficulties, and Tracy Chevalier has also waived her judging fee to support the cause.

Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook 2015 Short Story Competition
Closing Date: 15th February 2015
Entry Fee: Free
The annual competition from the go-to guide for publishing is on the theme of JOY and stories must be no more than 2,000 words. The winner receives £500 and a place on a Arvon Writing course of their choice.

Bath Short Story Award
Closing Date: 27th April 2015
Entry Fee: £8
Entries must be no longer than 2,200 words and for adult or young adult readers, although the theme can be anything. First prize of £1,000 with 2nd and 3rd prizes of £200 and £100 respectively and further prizes in book tokens to be won also.

2015 Bristol Short Story Prize
Closing Date: 30th April 2015
Entry Fee: £8
An open theme for stories up to 4,000 words with winners and those short-listed to be published in the annual Anthology. Entrants can enter as many stories as they would like, with possible prizes including £1,000 and a £150 Waterstones gift voucher for first place, with comparative prizes for 2nd and 3rd places and seventeen short-listed entries winning £100 gift cards.

And Now…
For something a little different why not enter the Benchmark competition – raising money for charity with 40% of the £5 entry fee going to WIllow Burn Hospital and where the first prize is a beautiful wooden bench with personalised plaque. Closing date is 19th January 2015 at 9am.
